Bassler Equipment Co. was established in 1928 by Robert Bassler. At the time, Bob Bassler and his wife Dorothy had been operating a small coal stripping in Mocanaqua, Pa. Meetings with Mr. C.C. Miller from Manitowoc Engineering Company led to an arrangement to have Mr. Bassler find customers for C. C. Miller, and Bassler Equipment became one of the first four distributors for Manitowoc.
Operating at first from his cellar, Bassler built the current building in 1946 as parts inventory grew. Seven of the first fifteen Models 4500 were sold by Bassler Equipment, as well as five of the first ten Model 3500 cranes. Page Engineering buckets and Insley backhoes were added as secondary lines. The business grew under our philosophy : you can't do business from an empty wagon.
Milt Millington started work at Bassler Equipment in June of 1948. Milt learned the business from the ground up, gaining the trust of the customers in our area and understanding the special needs of the coal business. When Mr. Bassler died in 1965, Milt purchased Bassler Equipment Company with the Manitowoc distributorship. Milt's sons Mark and Scott joined the business and received similar training and became known as experts in Manitowoc parts and service in our territory and throughout the east coast.
As coal mining production dropped, Bassler Equipment branched out into Partner Industrial saws and road construction equipment, eventually adding signs, safety supplies and other contractor's supplies as demand grew. In 1996, Milt handed over the business to his four children, who continue to provide the quality service that has given us such a loyal customer base.
During the transition of ownership, sales shifted to contractor supplies and safely equipment. Inventory has increased in volume and variety which makes Bassler Equipment Company a major supplier in the northeast Pennsylvania region. The Manitowoc parts and service is still a substantial part of the business as reflected by the resurgence of the coal industry.
